Peace Malaysia to send medical team to Syria-Lebanon border
KUALA LUMPUR Aug 14
Peace Malaysia will send a medical team and set up a logistical base near the Syria-Lebanon border tomorrow.
Peace Malaysia coordinator Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said today the seven-member team will work with humanitarian relief teams of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in the northern cities of Allappo, Homs and Tartus where there are thousands of refugees.
The Malaysian team will also assess the feasibility of setting up a medical camp in Saida, south of Lebanon, and extend medical assistance as well as deliver 3,000 blankets contributed by Malaysia Airlines.
“Our first medical team will be in Syria until Aug 21 and it will also serve as a reconnaissance team and establish logistical parameters for our subsequent medical missions,” he said in a statement.
The team will establish communications and explore joint relief work with the Syrian Young Entrepreneurs Association which is looking after 500 Lebanese camped in the Al-Shariya High School in the southern Damascus suburb of Darayn.
